San José Caves Valencia are natural underground caves located in Vall d’Uixó, Castellón. This place is famous because it holds the longest navigable underground river in Europe.
These caves are inside a limestone mountain. The river inside the cave is natural, and you explore part of it on a guided boat. After the boat section, you walk deeper inside to see different formations and chambers.
The total visit normally takes around 40 to 45 minutes. Around 800 meters are done by boat, and around 250 meters are walked inside the cave. The temperature inside stays about 20°C all year, so it feels the same in summer or winter.
If students stay with me, in Gilet, the trip to the caves takes only about 20 minutes from home, making it an easy and comfortable excursion.
This place is very safe, organized, and well-managed for all types of travelers, including families and seniors. It is easy to enjoy and you don’t need extreme physical effort to visit.

Boat Ride Inside the Underground River
The visit starts by entering the cave on a guided boat. The water is calm and clear. The guide slowly moves the boat along the river path and you see the natural shapes formed over thousands of years. Inside, you feel silence. You only hear small water movements and the guide speaking in Spanish. The lighting is soft, so you can see the forms in a natural way. This is the moment where most visitors say they feel like they are inside another dimension. This boat section is peaceful and very emotional.
Walking Part Inside the Cave
After the boat section, you continue the visit on foot. This part lets you explore the inside structure of the cave more closely. You walk through natural galleries, rock formations and narrow passages that show different layers of the earth. The walking part is not very difficult. The floor is stable and safe. Here you can also see stalactites and stalagmites nearer. This combination (boat + walk) makes this experience full and very complete. Every time I take my SHIP students, this part is always very easy and relaxed. The drive itself already feels like we are slowly leaving the busy city and entering a more natural side of the Valencia region.
- By car: the most simple way. Around 45 minutes from Valencia. Roads are smooth and well signed.
- By private tour: many travelers choose this so they do not drive. They pick you up in Valencia and return you back.
- By bus + short taxi: possible too. A bit longer, but still doable if someone prefers public transport.
No matter which option you choose, the route is comfortable. The moment you arrive, you already feel a different atmosphere… calm, fresh and slow.

- Serra d’Espadà Natural Park: very calm, green and perfect to enjoy fresh mountain air. A short walk here after the caves always relaxes the mind.
- Sagunto Castle & Old Roman Theatre: a short drive from Vall d’Uixó. This is great if you love history and views over the Mediterranean.
- Port of Sagunto: nice place to sit near the sea, drink something and end the day at a slow pace. The beach area is wide, open and peaceful.
- La Vall d’Uixó town center: small cafés, local bakeries and simple Spanish life moments. Perfect to practice small conversations in Spanish with locals.
